LSD is a recognized leader in the development of public involvement programs (PIPs) for a wide variety of planning and design projects. We tailor each PIP to our clients’ goals and objectives, carefully selecting the tools and techniques that will allow us to develop consensus on project issues. To do this, we draw from a broad toolkit of techniques to reach out to people, provide them with the factual understanding to dispel myths, build trusting relationships, bridge differences, and find acceptable solutions. Our unique perspective as environmental and design professionals enables us to understand our clients’ needs to gain definitive direction from the affected or potentially affected community and the ability to use the appropriate forum to communicate important information to an interested public or agencies.
LSD’s public involvement capabilities are supported by an in-house team of public involvement and graphics/GIS specialists. We use various communication tools, including newsletters, reports and memorandums, exhibits, flyers, PowerPoint presentations, media programs, surveys, and websites. Other tools we have used include telephone hotlines, and door hangers. Public presentations to stakeholders—from technical and citizens' advisory committees and neighborhood associations to commission and city councils—are common tasks we undertake on projects.
